The Irish soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is one of the oldest of the terrier native breeds in Ireland. The breed has not changed that much over the years in that they are easily recognisable from pictures of the past. A good example of this is the Aran Fishermans Drowned child.
Greenstars where first awarded to wheatens on Patricks day 1938. This was after many years of hard lobbying by the founders of the breed club which included Dr Pierce and Mr M Blake to name only 2. The Club was founded around 1932 meaning that the club is 77 years old this year. We hold our annual Breed championship show every year and we had a record entry of 70 dogs on the 29th May 2009.
The ISCWT club of Ireland has many members both at home and abroad and strives to promote the breed in a positive manner. Without the care and dedication of wheaten fanciers both now and in the past the breed would not have reached the heights which it has today.
It is the policy of the ISCWT club of Ireland to educate people to the standard of the breed and the nature of the dog itself. It must never be forgotten that a wheaten is a terrier at heart and as such is extremely energetic but yet they are very loyal and from time to time suffer from a condition known as selective hearing!
It is also the responsibility of the ISCWT club of Ireland to advise all its members of the Irish Kennel Club code of ethics as set out by the IKC 01-01-99.
